Genesis Technology Center is enabling economic development in Kosovo through practical training in electronics design and manufacturing, applied technology research, and technology business incubation. GTC programs are tailored for engineering and computer science students and graduates of universities in Kosovo and neighboring countries in eastern Europe.

Kosovo entered the world stage during the war in 1998-1999, when it was ravaged by war and ethnic cleansing.  The war devastated buildings, infrastructure, and the economy.  Because of a massive international outpouring of aid, the buildings and infrastructure are largely rebuilt now.  The economy, however, is still struggling.

Most recently, the eyes of the world were on Kosovo when it became the newest country in the world on February 17th, 2008.  If Kosovo is to emerge as a stable country, development work must continue in order to restore the economy.

Land of Opportunity

Kosovo has a number of positive factors that make it a good candidate for economic development.  Kosovo has the youngest population and highest birthrate in Europe, low labor costs, progressive laws modeled after international best practices, and favorable trade treaties with SE Europe, the EU, and the United States.

Given a push in the right direction, Kosovo can become prosperous, providing products and services to a regional market of 100 million people, and eventually to the rest of the world as well.  Not surprisingly, however, there are some pitfalls to development as well.

Land of Challenge

As in much of Eastern Europe, the economic conditions in Kosovo are challenging, with almost 40% of the population living in poverty.  For Kosovo to achieve some measure of success, there are a number of noteworthy challenges that must be overcome, including poor infrastructure, small manufacturing base, huge imbalance between imports and exports, corruption, costly venture capital, and lack of skills training.

The consequences of this challenging economic environment are vast and far-reaching; there is approximately 40% unemployment, and a disproportionate amount of this is among the youth.  Lack of economic hope combined with a rapidly expanding young populace breeds discontent, and sows the seeds for social upheaval.

Land of Hope: Transforming Kosovo through Technology Development

Technology has the best possibility for increasing exports, since it is not excessively dependent on macro-infrastructure (like transportation), and the necessary micro-infrastructure (like electrical power) is quite easily provided.

Considering the relatively underdeveloped status of Kosovo, it may seem somewhat of a stretch to imagine it becoming a player in the global technology market.  However, due to the high growth and constant change in the high tech field, the high value that technology delivers in small packages, the ability for technology to transform other industries, and the large pool of young engineers in Kosovo, it is worthwhile to pursue technology development in Kosovo.

Genesis Technology Center - Developing People, Products, and Prosperity

Genesis Technology Center is equipping engineers in Kosovo to design, debug, program, manufacture, and market electronics products competitive in the world market.  In our research program, engineers will work to develop new technologies and products.  Later, Genesis Technology Center will bring the best and brightest of these engineers together with progressive, young, motivated businessmen from Kosovo and will assist in the launching of technology businesses in an incubator setting.
